In 2013, the Holyoke Food and Fitness Policy Council and Fertile Ground conducted a plate waste fact finding project for the Holyoke Public Schools and the School Food Task Force. This project was conducted with technical assistance and support from the University of Massachusetts Western MA Public Health Training Center and the Center for Public Policy and Administration, and the Robbins de Beaumont Foundation. Project goals were to:
- Obtain an estimated physical measurement of plate waste to understand what volume of food is being consumed and thrown away.
- Understand the lunchroom environment and how this might contribute to children’s consumption of school lunch.
- Ascertain student preferences and provide feedback to the food service provider.
