Every year we receive numerous calls and emails from schools requesting help starting up or growing farm to school programs. In Spring of 2012, Fertile Ground, with Williamsburg Elementary School and Jackson Street School [Northampton] teachers, organized A School Garden & Food Forum: Healthy Eating, Healthy Communities. The two workshops, held at each school garden attracted over 85 people from over 20 schools in the region, provided teachers with garden curriculum connections, and gave parents, students and school committee members tools to further farm to school and wellness policies in the Northampton and Hampshire Regional School Districts. These events will have a ripple effect across the region [read our OP Ed piece on the forum].
We have also provided strategic planning technical assistance to the rural Whately and Deerfield Elementary Schools for fully integrated farm to school programs, engaging the community, elders, local farms, and teachers in developing curriculum.
